We ask that, wherever possible, parents/carers administer medicines at home. However, we do appreciate that there are occasions where it may be necessary for a child to receive medication during the school day. Prescribed medicines will be administered in school on the following conditions:
- A pupil medication request form has been completed.
- Antibiotics will be administered if they are required four times a day. If they are required only three times, they should be administered before school, after school and before going to sleep.
- The medicine is in its original packaging.
- Clear instructions about administering the medicine are given and the medicine is clearly labelled with:
- Name of the child
- Dose/frequency of administration
- Date of dispensing
- Cautionary advice
- Expiry date
- Parents are responsible for delivering and collecting medicines from the school office at the end of the school day.
Medicines will not generally be kept in school with the following exceptions:
- School keeps a supply of Paracetamol, Ibuprofen and antihistamine for emergency use if required. We will always contact parents/carers for written approval before administering over the counter medicines.
- Medication associated with treatment as appropriate to an agreed Individual Health Care Plan, e.g. Epi-Pens
- Inhalers for Asthma
